Pentagon Centre gets a facelift with a touch of green

interior plantscaping arlington vaThe Fashion Centre at Pentagon City (aka Pentagon City Mall) in Arlington, VA is undergoing a complete interior and exterior renovation. Completed in 1989, the facility was once home to MCI’s Consumer Markets headquarters (remember MCI?).

Pentagon City Mall has the distinction of being the largest enclosed shopping mall in Arlington, VA. It’s also been around for a while and has begun to show its age.

The Inside Out Interior Plantscaping division was contracted to bring some greenery to the interior of the mall. We employed out signature indoor planter installations to liven up drab areas of the mall such as under elevators and long expanses of unadorned wall space. The before and after transformation turned out to be striking!

Islands of greenery

The first step of the installation is to construct the supporting walls for the planters which are then lined with plastic and foam board. This technique is similar to what we described in our post on the interiorscaping installation at AEI (minus some additional sealing and height adjustment steps).

Potted plants are then positioned into the planters in a pleasing arrangement.

Little touches for a big difference

A top dressing is applied over the pots to provide a uniform surface just above the base of the plants. This provides an unbroken visual presentation to give the installation a natural look much like an outdoor garden.

As you can see from the photos below, the final result is quite the transformation from drab and barren to inviting, green and lush!
